55.3 GW. India's non-fossil capacity addition in FY 2025–26

The highest annual addition in the country's history, nearly double the previous record of 29.5 GW set the year before. Solar alone accounted for 44.6 GW of it.

Module prices have fallen dramatically over the last decade as domestic manufacturing has scaled. A complete residential system now installs for roughly ₹55,000–₹80,000 per kW before subsidy, and continues to trend down as capacity grows.

40+ lakh homes. PM Surya Ghar's progress toward its 1-crore target

The scheme's target is 1 crore Indian homes with rooftop solar by March 2027, with a subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for a 3 kW system. Cumulative rooftop installations under the scheme have now passed 40 lakh households nationally, well underway, with just under a year left to the deadline.

₹1.99/kWh, among India's lowest-ever utility-scale solar tariffs

Discovered in a Gujarat (GUVNL) auction in March 2023, this remains one of the cheapest tariffs for electricity from any source ever recorded in India, cheaper than new coal at scale. More recent standalone solar auctions have settled slightly higher as bidders shift toward solar-plus-storage tenders, but the direction of travel is the same: solar has decisively won on cost.

172 GW. India's solar module manufacturing capacity

Up from about 2.3 GW in 2014, a roughly 75x increase in just over a decade, per government figures presented in Parliament. India is no longer just an installer of solar; it is becoming a serious manufacturer and exporter.

#3. India's rank in global renewable energy capacity

India overtook Brazil in 2026 to become the world's third-largest holder of installed renewable energy capacity, according to IRENA's Renewable Energy Statistics 2026. Only China and the United States now rank ahead.

500 GW. India's non-fossil fuel target for 2030

Under its updated climate commitments, India has pledged 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. As of 31 March 2026 the country had reached 283.46 GW, over halfway there, having already hit the 50% non-fossil share milestone five years ahead of schedule.

₹3.5 lakh crore-plus, the renewable energy investment India needs through 2030

Roughly on the order of USD 40 billion-plus in further investment is required to stay on pace for the 2030 target. It is already flowing, from domestic banks, green bonds, FDI and the PLI manufacturing scheme, but the scale required remains substantial.

India's installed renewable capacity has grown roughly 3.6x since 2014, a sustained double-digit compound growth rate driven by falling costs and rising demand rather than a single policy push.

A meaningful share of GDP, what unreliable grid power costs Indian businesses

Independent research has repeatedly found that outages, voltage instability and distribution losses impose costs on Indian businesses equivalent to several percentage points of GDP annually, once lost production, spoilage and equipment damage are counted. Distributed renewable energy, rooftop solar, captive generation, behind-the-meter storage, is the structural fix no grid upgrade alone can fully replicate.
